Trust in developer?

I recently bought a module from addon store, and it doesn't work.  The developer wants credentials to the website.  I have 1000s of customers and orders on the site so I don't feel comfortable giving out that info,  Am I overly paranoid?  Has there ever been instances where that was a problem?

In addition to trust, I would NEVER give anyone access to a live web site. I have also learned to never install a module without first testing on a current copy of the web site.

Well that works for you, can you step into the shoes of others unaware how shops, installation and else works? Its is clear that by buying a module of someone which is not working the best reaction would be a refund.

You misunderstand my post. I'm agreeing with you.

You can solve this problem by cloning your website. In the cloned website, delete or modify all your useful information and provide the developer with test demo data.

It's usual to ask for BO and FTP credentials if the module doesn't work.

Please note that developers can't test the modules with all the other modules and modifications that could be in a store, so irretrievably bugs appear.

Of course it would be ideal if you have a TEST store.

how can dev support without access?  if you are going to take the leap of loading a module to your production shop without first testing then it's not a large leap to allow dev access.  how else are they to solve?

It is normal to ask for back-office and FTP credentials, otherwise it is very difficult to identify a problem. As you have been told what you can do is clone your store and send the test to the developer
