We can't expect buyers to empty the cache

Recommended Posts

I am (still) building up my website. I have noticed something strange.

If you have looked at my website (in early stage) you did had ex-gst prices and if you click a product in you cart it does give a message that it is added, but the cart is empty.!!

After clearing the cache all these problems are solved and all is good.

But ofcourse my potential clients don't know that they need to clear the cache and I can't bring that message accross. How can I make sure that the potential buyer always has the newest version of my webshop (without needing to clear caches or such)

And how can I make sure that they always open in NZDollar (and not USD)

Thanks

Change your cookie-sessions time for front-office, in order to avoid long term caching.

Go on tab administration -> preferences -> lifetime of front-office cookie - put there a time of 60 or lower (default is 480).

or disable cart re-display on login on tab preferences -> customers.

clearing browser cache, and reducing cookie expire time are very different things.  clearing your browser cache will not remove the users session cookie.

lets first clarify what the issue is, and how long you expect to be 'developing your store'.  is this a problem only now because you are making drastic changes to your store, and you would expect to stop doing that at some point?

or is this a problem because you have frequent repeat customers that visit and purchase things from you, and you intend to change your store frequently in between those visits?

btw. i just viewed your shop and i can add products to cart without problems.

issues that you've got appear because you intensively developing own store.

it's common problem especially when you're working on it all the time,

changing tpl, php, clearing shop cache etc.

in simple words - all of this can be "confusing" thing for browser

As Bellini13 was telling. I think it is an issue from now, as we are just starting up (for the third time by the way) and now it has the feeling it works fine. In the mean time when building we noticed that issue. Yes we cleared our cache but of course we can't expect customers to do the same.

So we were wondering what to do to prefend this  and will this happen again in the future?

As Vekia were saying it is confusing for the browser, my question was....will the browser settle down with the latest changes I have done to the shop without clearing the cache. I am thinking if I am customer, you just want to see the up to date shop.

Thanks vekia for testing the shop. That is a great relief for us. knowing that all is working fine.

Is it possible to test the other shop of us too, please www.tease2please.co.nz

Thanks for your responses

Let's clarify something.

If you're changing something in tpl files and your shop run with "caching" option available, you will need to clear cache in the shop (not browser) - then changes will be visible automatically for everyone.

All problems with browser cache that you've got - you've got because of intensively testing / working / cache clearing in your shop. It's normal while developing process, browser can go crazy because of this ;)

You're asking also about your customers, well, if they will use your shop like "normal" user - shop will work also as "normal" shop.

It would be great if you can do some testing on both of our websites. Really appreciated. Any comments are welcome.

You may send comments to contact email address if you prefer.

Thanks

did you do as suggested by vekia?  It is very helpful to community if you respond to suggested changes and their results or lack of.

I followed instructions from selectshop.at and it seems all is ok. I don't know if that was the final sollution but it helped as it seems that vekia could log in just fine.

As far as I understood from vekia it had to do with developing the site. I still have to find out where I am able to clear the shop cache :)

I have checked the cache (advanced parameters -- Performance)  and don't quit understand what I need to do. Or what the best is to do?

If I click smarty cache or if I click on caching I get the following message: "To use Smart Cache directory must be writable"

Also the message: "The CacheFS system should be used only when the infrastructure contains one front-end server. If you are not sure, ask your hosting company" is there.

Do I need to change something or do I need to contact my hosting company

(By the way this is only for the oopsee website the other one is ok)

This is also a major issue with my site. We changed IPs and the site is still showing a screen stating that the server is down even though its been up 3 days. Ive cleared the cache constantly and still people cannot view my front page. If you havent viewed it before, its obvious that your not going to see this issue since its a cache issue but still - we need a better way to helping customers see a newer version of the site.

This has nothing to do with Prestashop, it can take several days for DNS changes to propagate across the world, and further more it can take additional time for users that have your IP address cached on their computers (not browser cache, but in networking).

Was there a reason you believe this is an issue with your Prestashop software?
