Category Ordering

So it looks like the default for displaying the category list on my main store page is alphabetical--is there any way to change this, say if I want a custom order of what is displayed?  I.e., my categories are different types of yarn, and I want to display them from thinnest to thickest.  It looks like in the category list in backoffice each category is assigned to a number (ID), and in backoffice I can click on the arrow to order them by this number, but it doesn't change anything in my storefront

Have a look in back office>preferences>product_settings. There are a couple of options there that may help.

Right, they give options for how products are ordered, but not categories...any ideas how this might be done?

I know in previous builds, naming the category "1.Category Name", "2.Second Category Name" would order them in numerical order, and I am pretty sure it works in RC3, but I am not sure.
