Change the product background from a color to an image?

Good day to all you presta wizards!

 

ver 1.6.1.7

 

Would like to change the ImageManager.php (and/or related css?) so that all of the white border area is filled with a patterned image rather than a color.  I would like all of the generated images to look like

rather than the default 

.

 

I've found lots of good information for changing the color and have successfully done so, but I think my query is a bit more complicated... yes?

Yeah, it's complicated.
To go the easy way, simply add some padding to each image's container, and use a custom image as background. The effect will be the same
