EV SSL is mandatory for ecommerce website?

I am creating my first Prestashop based webstore and planning to use OpenSSL. EV SSL are very costly.

Is it mandatory to use third party's EV SSL or OpenSSL is suffice? Using OpenSSL in ecommerce website is good idea?

Generating and using a self-signed certificate is a big no-no, since all modern browsers will display a warning like this:



You need an SSL certificate issued by a trusted CA.

you can use openssl to create your CSR, but you should never use a self signed SSL certificate in a production store.  It defeats the entire point of having one.

 

Your customers want to know that your website is trusted and secure, and that it has been validated by a trusted authority.  You need to do your own research as to which is the best SSL option to use.  This is outside the scope of Prestashop.

Look at the offerings by Comodo, GeoTrust, Thawte. If I recall correctly, the most basic certificates start from around ~15-19 USD/year.
