Price on product page showing zero

I am setting up products in a client store. We have products with combinations which affect the price.

On these products if 'leave base price' in the prices section is left unchecked the price shows on the product page however if the box is checked the price shows as zero on the product page.

I am not sure if I have misunderstood but I would have thought that base price would always need to remain and any price changes for attribute combinations would be handled separately.

Can anyone shed any light on this?
