itfidds
We want to upgrade a very basic shop which was designed many years ago using Joomla 1.0.x and VirtueMart 1.0.x - so that's a long time back! Our question we believe is fairly simple: - Out of the box - can PrestaShop do this? Present a homepage that has a slider for random products (from random categories) at the top with a brief description of the shop underneath with a brief description of (say, 6) random products (from random categories) including a thumbnail Allow users to order without logging in Assume that if the shipping address is empty then the shipping address is the billing address Calculate the shipping cost based on the delivery postcode - we are using Spanish postcodes so for example the shop is based in 04727 and shipping to 04720-04723 = 8 €, 04724-04725 =6 € etc. We would be happy to purchase a theme such as: - http://addons.prestashop.com/demo/FO6041.html http://addons.prestashop.com/demo/FO4405.html http://addons.prestashop.com/demo/FO6210.html http://addons.prestashop.com/demo/FO5222.html Any guidance would be much appreciated. benjamin utterback
All of those are YES! We can do that out of the box without purchasing modules. However, you may want to look at different shipping carrier modules and other modules that can help you set up shipping because that can obviously be a little tricky.
vekia
... and of course you can use many other modules for example sliders (you can find great modules here on forum and on official addons store). PrestaShop is a powerfull tool, you can do with this script everything because it is very flexible. It mean that you can customize all aspects of your store
itfidds
Hi and thanks to those who have replied so far. We have spent some (considerable) time evaluating where we go from here and our first conclusion is move away from VirtueMart. Whilst we have lots of experience with Joomla (and like it) we believe that VirtueMart, not only has not moved forward, but has positively gone backwards. We also looked at WordPress with WP e-commerce. Very unfriendly and not intuitive at all. So we think it's time to use an ecommerce product rather than a CMS with an ecommerce plugin. And here we are... We have (by hook or by crook!) narrowed it down to 3 products - Magento, PrestaShop and OpenCart but feel that PrestaShop will be our preferred platform. Now we have downloaded PrestaShop and installed on our local server for testing. The most important feature to configure we believe will be the shipping method so that's where we shall start... Any further help regarding the shipping would be very much appreciated. Thanks again.
vekia
no worries, if you have got any other questions - just create new threads in the correct forum sections, then you will receive a loot of responses thanks for choosing prestashop!

itfidds
Thanks Vekia and Benjamin, We have spent a day looking for a shipping solution to no avail. Which forum would be best suited for a question on shipping? Regards, Steve
vekia
i think that you should create new topic in the: configuring & using prestashop section: http://www.prestashop.com/forums/forum/104-configuring-using-prestashop/
itfidds
Thank you, we will post a question in that forum. Incidentally, we have found that it is relatively easy to acheive in Magento but what a monster!!?!??! You need a degree in astro-physics just to setup a store and as for configuration? It's a nightmare...
vekia
definitely no if you will use default features - it is very easy to configure the shipping. Please create new thread where you will clarify a bit what you want to achieve, then will see
