ADD a category with an import?

I know that the import process allows some "delta" imports, adding information to existing records.

 

I need to add a category to every product in my system.

 

Is that something I can do with import?

Yes you can do that. When import product you can assign category. If you download the csv file of the prestashop import/export tab you will see there is category field where all the category you need to put inside ; and those category name will be separated by " , " commas.

Yes, but I already have products and categories. If I import the file, does it *add* the new categories, or replace them?

If the category is exits it will not add that. Just use same name.

There is bug in the import CATEGORY process for 1.5.4.1 in that new categories on the file are not added. Have submitted a bug fix request here:

As far as I know, you can't import new categories from the PRODUCTS import file and have them added in. You will probably get errors.

I think I mis-labled this topic and have caused confusion. The real title should be:

 

Can I ADD a category to an existing product with import?

 

The term "new" should not appear, and I am not creating a category. I would simply like to add an existing category to about 1/2 of the products.
