simpson7647
Hi all, I started creating my website over a year ago in version 1.3.1.1 and had the website complete with custom themes (orange and black I modified myself) along with a couresel on the hompage. I've now changed my supplier so will be literally replacing everything on the website although I have a question. Now as Ive got to update everything, is it worth upgrading my version to a later one? Which should I go for? How stable is the version? What advantages would I get? How easy is it to upgrade If i needed to keep the products? How easy is it to upgrade if I didnt need to keep anything? Many thanks,

Mike Kranzler
Hi simpson, If you haven't seen it already, we have a new, experimental AutoUpgrade module for version 1.3 and up. You can find the file, along with instructions on how to use it, here. It may not work with all PrestaShop configurations if it has been altered enough from the core, but if your shop is compatible, it'll do the whole process for you in less than 10 minutes. As long as you back up your site first (which you should be doing regularly regardless), there shouldn't be any harm in giving it a shot! I hope this helps. -Mike
Mike Kranzler
I'll try to answer your specific questions as well: Now as Ive got to update everything, is it worth upgrading my version to a later one? Absolutely. You'll get the latest features, updates and bug fixes, and will be in a much better position to stay up-to-date on all of our newest releases and updates. Plus, you'll be able to utilize many modules and themes which may not be compatible with your current version. Which should I go for? Right now, our latest stable release is version 1.4.6.2 How stable is the version? Very. We have multiple safeguards in the form of security and stability tests that must be passed before we are comfortable promoting a stable release. What advantages would I get? Too many to list; software years are a lot like dog years, so there have been so many changes, updates and improvements in the year and a half since 1.3.1 was the newest version of PrestaShop How easy is it to upgrade If i needed to keep the products? That may depend on your specific configuration, but part of the AutoUpgrade process does work on your database and if you haven't altered many core files (don't worry, the module will tell you how many have been modified before starting the process) you shouldn't have much of an issue. How easy is it to upgrade if I didnt need to keep anything? If you don't need to keep anything, you may just want to consider doing a clean install of our latest version, which you can find here. I hope this helps. -Mike
simpson7647
Hi Mike, Thank you very much indeed your time in writing all that and the input, sounds great and everything you state leads to me upgrading! So If I just follow those instructions : http://www.prestashop.com/forums/topic/136668-1451-upgrade-guide/ That will be upgrading my version to the latest stable version? Will all my products etc remain? Many thanks Mike!
Mike Kranzler
Yes, that is the latest, stable version, and that module will stay installed on your shop to allow you to continue to upgrade as we continue to improve our software! As long as you haven't made too many modifications, your products should be fine, but that is why we ask you to back everything up first, just to be safe. I'm glad I could help! -Mike

Mike Kranzler
Hi simpson, In your Back Office, please go to Preferences > Performance and then enable Force Compile and disable Caching at the top of the page. You should have these settings any time you're doing work on your site, as this will ensure you're always seeing the very latest version of your page. It's not recommended for a live environment because it will slow down the page a bit as it reloads from scratch each time, but its great for these sorts of situations where you're making lots of changes. I hope this helps. -Mike
simpson7647
Thanks for the reply Mike. Currently, both those settings are YES. So for when editing my website, leave force compile enabled and disable the caching. What should I do when I live the site please? Thanks,
Mike Kranzler
When the site is live, just disable Force Compile, and leave Caching on. However, if you're ever spending some time making changes, go ahead and turn Force Compile on and Caching off again just to make sure you're always seeing your changes. -Mike

Mike Kranzler
It looks to me that the Home Text Editor isn't showing up at all on your home page. Can you please go to your Back Office and find the Home Text Editor under the Modules section and ensure that it is installed correctly? If it is installed, go ahead and quickly uninstall it and then reinstall it, and let me know if that resolves this for you. -Mike
