Customers do not receive order confirmation emails

My emails work fine except for order confirmations - none are sent to the merchant and none to the customer. Addiitonally, the cart still shows the items waiting to be 'checked out" after payment has been made and customer is taken back to store. There they are greeted with 'guest tracking' but without an order ID that is not possible.

 

I'm at my wits end with this and cannot activate the store until resolved. Please help?

Have you installed and configured the 'Mail Alerts' module?
