Adding an amazon-like category specific search

Hi there,
i've seen many open threads about this topic, with no answers unfortunately, and i hope i'll be more lucky on it. Would it be possibile to shape the search engine to respond a category-specific search? Would be cool to add a category listing aside the search form, and then perform the search according to which category was selected.

Anyon can enlighten me about how the search in prestashop works?
