[SOLVED] Questions on "manual" upgrade

I have made numerous changes in my current installation so I was wondering if the following would work:

1. Install 1.4 in a separate folder (done)
2. Import categories, suppliers, items and what from my 1.2.4 installation
3. Compare code and implement changes
4. Make a final import and shut down 1.2.4
5. Move the 1.4 files into the root (where I have 1.2.4 now)

My questions are mostly about step 2, but other input would be nice too.
How do I make the export? The backup functionality creates a broken zip file, so I guess a export via phpadmin is the way to go. But format/settings?

I tried csv and default settings, but when I try to import, it doesn't seem right (see pics, first using unzipped and second zipped)

Never mind. I guess it's just as easy to

1. Make a copy of my current installation in a sub folder
2. Upgrade the copy
3. Make the code changes
4. Upgrade the original shop
5. Copy the changed files from the copy to the live shop
