How to update? Need file placement guidance

Hi,

I'm trying in vain to get my .5 version updated to .8 before the next release. I need a little bit of help here.

Where do I put the files in my system, exactly, to make the new version acknowledge that I'm doing an update and not a fresh install?

I unzipped the files, but overwriting my store's existing files can't be right, it would then be a fresh install. So - where do I place the new files I unzipped so the current installation will see it and let me upgrade?

Make full backup of all of your files and database.

Then upload all files to your shop directory.
