When I switch to en and click a product, even if the link looks fine (has /en* in it), it redirects me on the /fr/* page. Maybe if you clear your browser cache and cookie or visit using chrome incognito you may have different results. I'm on a slow connection over the weekend but I was able to navigate add to cart etc and only changed languages when I selected another language, it did not change as you described.
