Adding Languages - does it increase site visibility?

Hello

I can see the advantage of having different language packs but does it affect search engine results...ie If I added a French language pack would my site appear in google.fr with the appropriate keywords and product descriptions displayed in French?

The main purpose of a multilingual site is if you are/have a specific popular known brand.

To rank well in numerous countries it is better to buy domains such as myshop.fr and myshop.it and have a single language version on each.

You'd certainly expand your customer base to French and Canadian visitors. But if they contact you will someone be available to translate (or knows French)?
