How to allow customers to search by product reference number? Only words come up

I am using 1.6.3 and when a customer searches for an item in the search bar, only words can be used.

Is there a way they can enter the product reference number and search? 

 

Currently I do not see an option to have them look up (search) by product reference number.

This is a default function and should work, check you Preferences, Search and rebuild entire index and see if it works then.

In every Prestashop version I have used and tested never had an issue searching with reference number.
