Background changes

Hello there!

 

I would like to go for advertising on the left and right site of my store. Since ps 1.6 uses a very space havy design in terms of the content i would like to get something like a main container in a different color than the sites. Is there anything to do that without loosing the black background in the footer? (Talking about the default design)
