How can I add new categories that are just for text?

I have successfully added all of my products under one category tab. I now want to add multiple categories across the front page of my site to include only informational text, so that I can talk about more detail and features of my products. In the back office it will only let me add more products to the one category that was there. This seems like is should be so obvious. I'm new to this, so what am I missing here?

why not to use preferences > cms ?

i don't know what you exactly expect, but to define simple text pages (without products as you said) you can use CMS feaure.

If you want to add "description" of category - each category has got "description" field on each category edit page - this can be used also as a place to insert informations about available features etc.
