Looking for back office custom coding around reference numbers

I'm looking to make an adjustment to the way reference numbers work with product combinations when you duplicate a product. Right now, if you duplicate a product that has combinations set up and then change the reference number, it does not change the reference number for all the combinations because it uses a different database value (attribute_reference vs reference). I'd like to also have that attribute_reference number change to the new number.

 

Would like to know the time and cost involved for an adjustment like this.
