Search continually unfruitful - need for help unprecedented

I have a REALLY simple request. I need to create a payment module. I can code the form and the validation and everything myself - I have that down pat. But so far I have been unable to find out how to ADD information to the database based on user input in the payment screen. Basically, the module will collect BankCard information and save it to the database, then show it during the order review. I think it is a simple thing, but I really do not know where to start. I have tried to modify the Cheque module - but that does not take user input, so so far it has done me no good. PLEASE - if you have any information - email me or post a reply.
