Installation step 2 not working

Hello,

I am trying to install Prestashop though I get stuck at the system and permissions check at step 2. It does not seem to start the check at all. There is no red "X" or green "V" indicator at any of the tests. I set all the permissions as requested in the documentation and did not forget to do it recursively where asked.

On the page you see the progress bar on the top right for a few seconds, but then disappears. I saw several other older posts on this forum related to the same problem, though without solution.

Clicking the "Refresh these settings" button makes all the checks dissapear and shows the progress bar on the top right for a few seconds.

Attached a screenshot.. Any idea what it can be?

Apache/2.2.14
PHP Version 5.2.16
FreeBSD 7.2-RELEASE-p6

Ps. no problems using other installation wizards from e.g. OSCommerce or Wordpress.
