How to upgrade my shop? I really can't get a help. In basic steps, please.

1. I don't know what Version of Prestashop I have right now. I know it is about 1 year old. And, also, I know, I don't like the fact that I don't have UPS or FedEx modules incorporated. That's the main issue for me. And we have to make a "FREE SHIPPING" because of this problem. In NEW Version : v.1.4 RC6 I see there is a possibility to have Shipping MOdules.

2. I don't see any difference what version to what version to upgrade. I need a "GENERAL Knowelege" and technics how to do it. If I click to: New Version- there an option: "OPEN" Or "Download". If i download it, what should I do next?
What happens with my old version? Do I loose all my data on site and so on....

If you can help me with this I would really appreciate. Rest of my components are working properely.
