Assign variable if sign up newsletter

Hi,
In my history.tpl, i want to display :

You are Signed up for our newsletter

I added in history.tpl after

{l s='Order history'}

{l s='Here are the orders you have placed since the creation of your account'}

this :

{if $customer->newsletter == 1}

{l s='You are Signed up for our newsletter'}
{/if}

This does not work.
Can anyone help me?
