Dee P.
After dreaming for years about having my 1st site for selling items and taking classes on HTML and PHP/MySql for 2 years, I'm finally getting ready to build that site. I plan on using PrestaShop and InMotion for hosting. But am confused as to where to go from here. The only site I've written was using notepad for a class project. Real simple to take care of and send off to GoDaddy. The instructions for downloading PrestaShop is for directly to the host. But, I want to build a large catalog of my items before it goes live so there will be plenty of stuff for people to see. Also expect it will take awhile to build. Is it better to download PrestaShop to WAMP on my computer until it's ready to send to the host? How do I do that? Or, if I eat the cost of hosting and download it to InMotion, is there a way to tell the host when I'm ready to go live?Any words of wisdom? Don Camillo
so already 26 looks here and no one replied..., as another newbie Ill try to answer something. You indeed can install it on your PC by using Wampserver or Xampp. I have also installed Wampserver to try Prestashop but it took more configuring then I thought, I red somewhere that Xampp is easier to setup. But using the instructions Wampserver eventually worked well... The Host should be able to not put it online yet, I asume (!!)... So cán a host leave it offline or do you do that yourself using your own settings??Another question regarding this is: Is it wise to try it with Wamp or Xampp on your computer or is it better to directly install it on your host (looking at possible errors). So could a complete shop made with Wamp/Xampp get possible errors when you later put it on a host? Thanks in advance. Don C.
Dee P.
Thanks Don. I'll be looking at setting up initally on Wampserver since I already have it set-up on my computer. But you did bring up a very good question I hadn't thought of. Maybe someone can help answer our questions:1. Does a site set-up with a host go live from the start of set-up or do you have to tell the host to make it live when you are ready?2. Are there possible errors/problems you would otherwise have if you start your site building with Wampserver?
tomerg3
Check out http://www.presto-changeo.com/content/14-prestashop-installation-tips for some good tips. You can set the shop on your host (it's live as soon as you upload files), but you can restrict it by IP address from the backoffice (Preferences tab)
Don Camillo
Thanks, thats indeed the instructions-page I used to set up PS on wampserver. (wamp is the old name, now its wampserver) The other question is also; can a completed configuration (website build with PS) made with Wampserver, get possible errors when put on a host?. (I believe I red that somewhere...) Than it would be wiser to create it the way you want from start on a host... Or are there no possible errors when made on wampserver first? Thanks. Don C. tomerg3
You can do it on your local and then upload to the server without any problems, but you should give it some good testing there before turning the store on, in case any file permissions or anything else is not set correctly.
