I came across to another project that could be usefull implement at the prestashop site. Its called Pootle. You can see more details here.

The project aims using file such as *.po if it could be implemented to prestashop.

Well, so far nobody answered this topic.
What do you think about it?

Thanks.

These two projects work with gettext translation files, usually .po or .pot extensions.

Unfortunately PrestaShop utilizes a custom built translation system, which is not compatible with the mentioned softwares.

Pootle is a good find, though, thanks for linking it :)

gettext is a standard in many projects, mainly because it's a really simple way of dealing with multilanguage softwares.

You can find some basic infos about the standard here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GNU_gettext

We use drupal, and it has integrated gettext support. Have a look here:
http://localize.drupal.org/

It's much similar to pootle, and it is integrated in the software. You can also easily update the translations from the main drupal localization server through drupal itself.

That's the ideal way of dealing with translations, but i don't think the way prestashop does it is necessarily wrong. To be honest, converting the actual system used in PS to gettext could take quite some work, i really don't think you should start working on it, before getting approval from the main developers.

Post a feature request or a bug and have a discussion with them before doing anything.
