Price display based on language in PS 1.6

My shop is running PS 1.6 at the moment.  I have been getting things ready to launch the French language version as I sell in Canada.  Everything is pretty much done at this point.  Language pack installed, product translations complete, etc.  One thing I cannot seem to figure out is how to change the way the prices are displayed.  In English we use a decimal point, whereas; in French we use a decimal comma.  In English, the dollar sign is on the left, whereas; in French, it is on the right.

I have also been setting up a version of my shop using PS 1.7, getting ready to launch that platform in the not-too-distant future.  In 1.7, when I select French on the front office, the prices display in the correct French format, but on PS 1.6, it keeps the same format as the English site.  Is there a way to fix this?
