Multishop question regarding stock

When I first set up my online store I didn't select the share available quantities to sell

A few years down the line  things have changed and I need additional stores where the stock is connected between the group,  example a B2B shop that shares stock from the main shop.  my concern is if I activate this now my stock quantities will collapse to zero and I will be forced to stock take around half a million individual items'

I noticed on the small print   (When changing this option, all available products quantities will be reset to 0.)

Is there a work around for this ?

 

Im currently running 1.6.0.14
