Definitions

I am trying to upload spreadsheets to add inventory. In the process I have concluded that I really don't understand the context of a number of the terms being used. Could someone please explain the following terms and how they apply to spreadsheets?

Attribute. Combination. Options. Groups. Features. Default. And any other term I should know and understand that I didn't list.

Also, is there any way to do a spreadsheet with a bulk of inventory and upload them with prices and sizes or color variants and NOT use the combination generator. With the amount of things needed to upload it seems as though there should be an easier way than going back and doing it one by one.
