Big thumbnails and crashed template

Why do I always have a crashed theme caused by big thumbnails on main page? What is the solution and reason? Ive changed .htacces of /themes and /modules folder to:

<Files "\.tpl$">
Deny from all
</Files>

from

<FilesMatch "\.tpl$">
Deny from all
</FilesMatch>

and installed a theme. Thats all. If i try to do this on other themes the situation is the same. Can anyone help? My shop:
