.bmp Image uploading causes crash

I'm working on a WAMP 2.0 stack (PHP 5.3.0, Apache 2.2.11)I've been working on a site which had a product which had a customization field to upload and image. I tried to upload a .bmp image and this caused apache to crash. Tried the same thing with a clean, unmodded installation of prestashop and the same thing still happens! I know you're not supposed to be able to upload BMP files but surely this shouldn't cause my application server to crash!?

Can someone try doing the same thing on their prestashop, uploading a .bmp file with an image custimzartion field, and tell me what happens? Hopefully it's just this machine and once I move it to a live server it won't happen.
