shipping quote before check out and remove birth date form sign up

I just had some feed back from a customer about why he couldn't purchase as a guest. He did not want to give his birth date to sign up on the site. He also wanted to know why he couldn't get a shipping quote before check out so it's part of the buying decision. I think these are reasonable requests and wonder how to get rid of the birth date question and how to make shipping quotes visible before checkout. I know I find these same reasons for not shopping a site sometimes.
