blocktopmenu - blank drop down after disabling sub categories

Hi

I have disabled (set to not display) all my sub categories but I have an issue in that I now have blank sub category drop downs on my top menu.

 

I've search around but not found a fix for this beyond the suggestion to comment out the code within blocktopmenu.php which I would prefer not to do as I may want to re-instate the sub categories at a later date.

 

Any help would be gratefully received.
