Shouldn't paypal work "out of the box"?

I find it surprising that the built-in, RELEASE version of the Paypal module (1.6) on a fresh install of 1.2.5.0 does not work properly out of the box - everything works until the user returns to the site when it then fails to write an order to the PS DB and tells the user they have no orders and their cart is still full.

I have spent hours researching this and tried various beta modules with no luck. All of the beta modules instantly spit out "order creation failed" which makes it seem like they tried to fix this, and then something in PS changed breaking it again.

I cannot, CANNOT understand how this can be deemed release-ready when this does not work right.

Go ahead and remove 80% of the features of PrestaShop, and then fix this ONE simple thing, and you'll have a product twice as good even without that 80%. Paypal is probably THE most common payment processor, and the MOST important function of an e-commerce store (and in fact, the primary function that defines it as being an e-commerce application as opposed to, say, "just a cart") is its ability to process payments, even in the most basic way, and this "cart" software does not do that.

Many bugs in the PayPal module have been fixed in v1.3. You can try installing it on a test server and see whether that fixes your problem. If it doesn't, report the problem on the bug tracker. That's how bugs get fixed. There are many different server configurations out there and Prestashop can't possibly test them all. Some server configurations cause problems in Prestashop.

Thanks for response, but this was (at least intended to be) more of a discussion about the standard what is considered release quality and attention on critical core functionality than griping about an edge-case bug that happens to be affecting me, which I don't feel is the case. But who knows. It is on the same server as another older shop running 1.1.0.5 and the problem affects that version too. And I could have sworn I had fixed it back when I set that shop up almost a year ago or more.

The beta one is working perfect though, maybe prestashop should work on integrating that in as the official

Unless something is drastically misconfigured during installation, PayPal should work out of the box. Unless you did something wrong this is quite distressing, even if it has been fixed in the latest version.

Could you share a link to the beta one?
Is this problem still occurring in 1.4? I recently upgraded my shop but haven't tested it (I don't really sell through it, it's more of a demo/test install)

Unless something is drastically misconfigured during installation, PayPal should work out of the box. Unless you did something wrong this is quite distressing, even if it has been fixed in the latest version.

And no, I didn't touch the paypal module in any more way than entering a sandbox email..
