Top horizontal menu module keeps losing configuration

I have been running on 1.6.0.8 for some time and its been working well.  The only thing I did was change the color of the menu because I found through google analytics and adwords that the default color of the menu was making the page too bland and was contributing to loss in sales.  A little while ago I noticed that google analytics started showing missing pages and I in turn found that the top horizontal menu was losing its configuration links.  I can click on the menu's configuration, make no changes and just re-save and this fixes it, but seriously, I just did this last night and today, the top horizontal menu was not working again.  All the other menu's (left side menu) works fine, but that top horizontal menu format is a contributor to success, when its working.  Any ideas why the configuration keeps cutting out and repeatedly needs to be re-saved to work?  This is being ridiculous.
