Migrating from Magento

Recommended Posts

Hi, I just discovered this platform and it looks pretty exciting. My current client complains of Magento's lack of usability, minor tweaks being such a tedious process, as well as several other issues. It looks like this platform has usability done better, which is a great start.

I want to know who else has come over from Magento.

What have been the good points?

What have been the challenges?

How is the code to work with in comparison?

Cheers,
Chris

Prestashop is a breath of fresh air after wrestling with Magento for which you need to employ a professional for everything

Much faster
Easier to understand
Easier to make tweaks - even I can do it.
Admin is pretty simple to use.
Sensible database structure

But Prestashop is a younger product with fewer resources behind it so there are less add-ons

Default theme is ugly imho
Less flexible esp. when it comes to discounts
Attribute system needs a rethink
Needs International addressing, SOAP, more payment gateways, order export

Thanks for the quick reply radders. :-)

I know what you mean, Magento is so aggravating. It's made by programmers for programmers, and no one else can use it. I know developers who have been working with Magento for years and hate every minute of it. The worst part is the support ... or lack of it! Sorry for the tangent. :red:

If you don't mind, I've got a few specific issues I need to resolve before I can recommend this platform:

1. How easy is it to transfer products from one to the other? For one client, I have ~1,000 products that would have to move and doing so by hand is simply not a good use of time.

2. My clients often use Authorize.net for payment. I didn't notice that in the demo, is it supported?

3. I often use an API with USPS and FedEx to get shipping rates. Can PS do that, or do I have to work something else out?

4. I have one client who has 3 website running off of their Magento system. Can PS run multiple sites or do I need an installation for each website?

Thanks again!

Magento is great if you can handle a bit of coding and understand everything that's under the hood - if not, then I wouldn't bother which is why I never did. Prestashop, however, is built on a great piece of clean coding and is very easy to learn if you want to configure parts or design templates. The support for prestashop is far better as well and there are some very helpful moderators on this forum that will always be willing to help a newbie out!

Hi scottyboy,

I'm comfortable working in code, but it's more than that. Many functions just simply do not work out of the box and you have to dig through all the code to make them work. For example, all of the e-mail templates have to be fixed in the code by hand. By default it'll say things like "Welcome to Demo Store" and "Contact us if you need help at [email protected]". These are things that are normally automatically handled by the system in every other CMS I've worked with. There's just way too many little things that you HAVE to do out of the box, and unfortunately there's no help as to what to do and where to do it. You just have to figure it out and find them all on your own. Of course, I imagine that wouldn't be a problem if I coughed up $10k for the "Professional" version. :-/

Sorry for the rant, I'm just a little fed up with what's supposedly one of the best ecommerce systems. IMHO, it is NOT one of the best ecommerce systems, which is why I'm shopping again. So far this platform looks promising. I'll have to do some testing when I can make the time. :-)

  • 1 month later...

Prestashop compare to Magento looks more easy to use but Magento is much more powerful, Prestashop needs internationalization, such us PayPal Pro, Authorize.net, FedEx, UPS, USPS with label printing and tracking, Google Checkout level 2, if Presta is able to add this options to version 1.3 then they have a winning solution, currently I am test www.opencart.com
