Site down after moving directory

Recommended Posts

I am in desperate need of some help with my site. I'll outline what I did then what it has resulted in and would be really grateful with any help as we were due to launch the site today.

I have been building my site in the directory /shop and had completed everything and was ready to move it to the root directory. I followed the instructions on the forum to the letter, backing up all my files, turning off the cache, before moving them all over then changing the shop uri to /dir/ and then regenerating the .htaccess file and robot.txt then switching the cache back on. This resulted in an error page being shown for the website with server error 500 and file permissions suggested. I tried to regenerate the .htaccess file again and again and looked for problems in the error codes but it just kept suggesting permission problems.

With it being clear that moving the site was going to be much more difficult than I imagined, I decided that I would move it all back to the original folder /shop and change the uri back then simply redirect the homepage to /shop. This has resulted in huge problems with the site and the back office and I don't know why. The site has lots of changes to the settings that were in place and things I had changed over the last month have reverted back. The back office no longer has any drop down menus and I can't turn things off and on. For example, turning the smarty cache off doesn't work, it just reverts back to on when I press save.

I am going through Cpanel trying to change files to the backups I did just before the move but without knowing exactly what's causing the problem, I don't know what to do.

Any help at this stage would be appreciated.

Just an update to rule out certain possibilities, I  have done the following without any success:

1. Tried changing .htaccess permissions to 666 as they were mainly set to 644 or 755. This appeared to work but it then reverted back to the same problems. I changed it back to 644 and then back again but with no joy. I even downloaded another copy of prestashop and checked all my .htaccess file permissions against the defaults... they are all the same as the originals.

2. I have restored the sql file to the backup I completed just before the problems started, but this has had no effect.

3. Restored the backed up admin/themes folder. This didn't change anything.

4. Restored the entire admin folder. Again, this hasn't changed anything.

I don't know what else to try?
