How are combination prices handled by PrestaShop?

To keep it simple lets assume I have a product with two combinations -- small and large. Small has no price impact. Large is +$10. Retail price is $5.

 

Does PrestaShop store this as combination #1 $5 and Combination #2 $15 and just switch between them based on which combination is selected or does it store the price as $5 and the attribute price impacts and then generate the current configuration's price on the fly?

 

I have a feeling it is the former but figured I'd ask.

 

My end goal is to be able to manipulate $price from the product page with user input but I can't use attributes so I'd basically be looking to code in my own user input and logic that I would add to the products page that would return a value that I could then use to modify price.

 

If someone who knows PrestaShop better than I do can confirm my suspicion that this won't work (or better yet confirm that it can work) it would save me a lot of time.
