Cannot update quantities, resets to zero

Hi all
Hope someone can help. A stock delivery has arrived today, first for a few weeks, so I am going in to the back office and adding products, and also trying to change stock levels for items that had sold out. Every time I go to the quantities tab, and try to change the quantity value, and press save, or save and stay, it says "update successful", but then returns to having zero quantity. I'm on 1.5.6.2 and have "specify quantities manually" checked. It applies to new products and to products I am re-stocking. Never had this happen before, so I can currently only sell things that I previously had stock of, I can't increment stock of anything else. Would appreciate some quick help in fixing this!
