Displaying first 12 subcategories + show more button

Hi guys,

 

We've got categories with lots of subcategories, so for instance one of our categories has 46 subcategories beneath it.

 

Rather than show all 46 subcategories we'd like to show the first 12 and then present a button if there are more than 12 to expand the sub-categories div to show the additional.

 

We would like to do this so everything above the fold isn't subcats.

 

Has anyone done anything similar to this previously?
