Virtual product behaviour differs from earlier versions

I'm considering taking my 1.4.7 store to the next level (1.6.0.6), but I ran into some differences that might force me to stay:

I (more or less) exclusively use the store to distribute small videos. The process is as follows; I generate virtual products from CSV and then manually edit them one by one by ticking it off as a 'downloadable product' and giving it a unique name (ex. 10aug130001.mp4) > as there has not been uploaded anything it warns me that the file is missing along with the path to ex. .../mystore/download/81ad4bd3bb7f16c3174a3792a8501171e4acfe6

This hash is vital for the success here; only after a customer has purchased his/hers unique video it will be rendered and uploaded; I then FTP the file '10aug130001.mp4' into the downloads-folder and rename it using the beforementioned hash. Hitting F5 on the product-page and presto there is no file missing anymore.

Unfortunately it seems as v.1.6.0.6 does not issue the same warning and so I'm unable to locate the hash associated with the filename; does anyone with first-hand knowledge of the newer versions know how to find the hash?
