Columns+Hooks=Noob

Recent ZC transplant here and very happy about it.

 

Trying to get my head around how hooks work, in the back end , not so much the code.....

after ZC my objective is to see code as little as possible.

 

I am  using this guide,

And having issues understanding the relationship between turning on moduales in the preferences/themes section  VS  Hooking said moduales in moduales/positions area...

 

Can moduales be "Hooked" into more than one area displayLeftColumn--displayRightColumn but controlled in the themes tab?
