Grid with hover/popups

I have a large number of magazine covers as individual products, probably best presented in batches and, to get these to display in any sort of compact arrangement, they would best be in a grid rather than top-down list on the Category page.

 

I'd also like to have a simple means to show what the content is of each magazine. Ideally, again a space saver, have a mouseover / hover box appear. Not a popup with a 'close' or cancel button, though that would work if nothing else does, but a simple mouseover to display whatever I've typed in for that product until the mouse moves away.

 

I'm still learning what can or can't be done inside the default installation and don't think either of these are incorporated. So,

 

Is it possible to get a grid display in Category?

 

Is it possible to set a mouseover with editable text for each product?

 

I've looked across the web for free and paid for modules to help but come up blank. Any help appreciated.. I'm using 1.5.6.1.
