How to change background colour

Hi there, loving this new software but making changes to the theme is stumping me!

 

I have managed to change the background colour using previous threads but managed to change the whole background colour whereas I really only wanted to change the far left and far right hand sides of my website. 

 

Can anyone point me in the right direction please? I have only just managed to figure out how to access these files and how to edit them so please make any replies as simple as poss!  

 

Also another question, I have tried to move the horizontal top menu bar down (again following previous threads) but it doesnt seem to show any changes on the site itself, I have used ctrl F5 but still cant see it changed.

what you mean by that? left right columns? or something other?

You should find in global.css

header {}

left column{}

center column{}

right column{}

footer{}

 

Try to change left column to:

left column{background-color: #000;}

thats excellent thank you Paulito, however is it possible to change the space that is to the left of the Categories column? i.e. the section that goes to the edge of the screen?

yes thats it Vekia and Paulito! Just the left and right hand sides but not the bits in between - so you just get one stripe on the left and on stripe on the right.

 

 I thought it was the background colour to start with but got confused by other threads !

you can change background color for BODY tag

 

body {background:red;}

 

then you will have there any color you want
