moving images 1.5.4 to 1.5.5 - gets server kompatibility error

Hi

I just installed a fresh 1.5.5 on my local test server (before going live)

and I have all the backup files moved over and the img folder

BUT when I try to fix the "question mark instead of product image" problem by
moving the images to the new method (images > move images) then I just got told that my server is not kompatible with this and no images were moved.

What to do? I tried both in legacy mode and without. Same problem.

What is it my server ain't ready to do?  (ubuntu server with apache, php5 and all)

(Fejl: Din serverkonfiguration er ikke kompatibel med det nye system til håndtering af billeder. Ingen billeder blev flyttet.)

translates to something like "error: your serverconfiguration is not kompatible with the new system for handling images, no pictures were moved"

any help is highly appriciated
