Are BASE64 Images Cached in CSS?

I replaced a dozen images by a sprite. 

Now I wanna replace several small images by BASE64 images.

Some people on Google let me know that those are not cached. 
Other people on Google let me know that those are cached when it is in the CSS file. 

So.. 

I think they are cached. But just to be sure.
