Question about importing products via CSV file

I have my products in a spreadsheet and want to import them into PS via a CSV file. I'm unclear about the Categories, though - do I add the categories first to my store, and then include those category names (or IDs) in my CSV? Or do I wipe the categories in PS and rely on the product import to create the categories for me?

 

I tried adding the categories first and referencing them by name in the CSV but all my imports failed (without any explanation.)

I was able to use the category IDs in the CSV that I'd already added in the store database.
