Generazione file Htaccess

Effettuando il passaggio dalla 1.1 alla 1.2.1 non riesco più ad utilizzare il friendly URL settando il file .htaccess. Ho notato che nella nuova versione è stata inserita una sezione che ci permette di creare il file Back Office >> Utilità >> Generator ma seguendo le istruzioni:

Prima di poter utilizzare questo strumento, è necessario:
- creare un .htaccess file vuoto nella directory: /
- Impostare i permessi in scrittura (chmod 777 su sistemi Unix)

Generando con il blocco note un file vuoto inserendolo nella root per poi rinominarlo in .htaccess e impostandogli i permessi a 0777 l'intero sito restituisce l'errore:

Internal Server Error
The server encountered an internal error or misconfiguration and was unable to complete your request.
Please contact the server administrator, [email protected] and inform them of the time the error occurred, and anything you might have done that may have caused the error.
More information about this error may be available in the server error log. 

Una volta ricancellato il file il sito ritorna funzionante.. sapete come aiutarmi? grazie a tutti
