You are right about losing Google rankings, and that is why it's a good choice to stay online, and just disable the order functionality.

 

I'm not sure how many daily visitors you have, but if the number is high (+50) you could use the newsletter module. and thus allowing your customers to sign up and be reminded when you are online again.

 

If you have a lot of daily visitors (+50) you could integrate the newsletter signup box in the red message box, and use it with a header saying "Sign up for our newsletter now, and we'll remind you when we are accepting orders again!".

 

You could also enable the buy function, but clearly state that orders will not be shipped until early April - However this is maybe not suited for the type of goods you sell.
