How do you import product images

Can someone help explain how to import large numbers of images from the internet. My suppliers provide a spreadsheet with the url where their images are hosted. I tried importing them via the CSV Import function, entering the hosted url of each image in the Url column, hoping that PrestaShop would import the images from their urls and store them on the site. Instead it rewrote the urls completely randomly and uselessly and didn't import anything. With hundreds of products and thousands more to go, I need to automate the process somehow. Thanks for any advice.
