UK Customisation/Translation

Recommended Posts

Hoping someone can help with this:

I'm trying to find out the best way to change "Cart" to "Basket" sitewide for my entire prestashop installation. I've found a few threads on this forum that detail editing certain files/templates etc, and I could do this easily but I want to know if creating a translation pack would be a better way of doing this?

In the UK, "Basket" is much more commonly used than "Cart" - which is an American term. Amazon.co.uk and com confirm this in their usage.

Can someone from the Prestashop team please create or allow the creation of a UK specific translation pack as it's not very accurate to just use the US translation for the UK audience as despite both countries speaking English, in some instances, the language is quite different.

I have attempted to figure out how to create a language pack myself by Googling and searching on this forum, but found nothing that gives the information I need. I've tried exporting the US language from the Back Office and performing a find and replace on it but gave up, as I don't think this is the correct way to do it. I've also investigated the lang folder in my sites theme folder so maybe I can apply this customisation using my theme but can't figure out how that fits in either or how the specifics work. Instead of a lot of guesswork, it would be great if someone could explain how to modify the US translation pack to be UK specific once and for all. Either that or create/allow/point me in the direction of a UK specific language pack.

Many Thanks

when you exported a language, didnt you noticed that there is option to Modify Translations, where you can very easy change any text on your site to whatever you want

Yes I noticed - and also know of many ways to edit files to get the effect I want. But that's not what I'm looking for.

I'd like to be able to create an "official" EN-UK translation file so that the process can be as simple as possible and also so that everyone can benefit. I just need some technical guidelines to do this from our community if possible.

If a forum Mod is reading this then I'd like to ask that an EN-UK translation is included in the main distribution if possible.

Amazed not more people have replied or I haven't yet even got a pointer in the right direction. Would really appreciate some help with this. I've noticed a lack of feedback in this forum - and not just for me - other questions seem to go ignored. Shame - as the community help is crucial to the success of projects like this - nothing seems to be improving with that unfortunately :-(

You can use Tools>Translations to do this.

You have Front Office translations, Back Office Translations, Module translations etc.

I use this for things like changing incl. Tax to incl VAT etc.

Once complete you can export this as a language pack.

Many Thanks for the Tip - was there all along - I'll give it a try. :-)

Still think Prestashop could use a EN-GB native translation - where do I suggest this so it gets picked up?

Ok, I've gone through and manually changed all instances of "cart" or "carts" etc to "basket" or "baskets" etc. I've now exported the language pack after choosing the "prestashop" theme from the dropdown menu under "Export a language".

I can't attach the file but I've uploaded it to my webserver so that others can download and use it so it should save you quite a lot of time if you need it. Please bear in mind that the linked file was exported from the main "prestashop" theme so I have no idea if other themes wouldn't incorporate those changes. Does the "prestashop" theme act as a base for the translations and then custom themes add to this?

Also please note that I haven't been able to change the translation to en-uk as I can't figure out how to do that. As far as I can tell, it will overwrite the default "en" language pack so I recommend you export an untouched version of "en" for all your themes before importing the linked one. If anyone knows how or even if we can improve on this then please do post back and I'm sure anyone who needs a UK translation pack would appreciate it.

Here's the link to the modified "en" translation language pack to make it UK specific for the "prestashop" theme.

Nice job. I'm sure it will come in useful.

Other suggestions:

States > Counties

Zip code > Post Code

incl. Tax > incl. VAT

excl. Tax > excl. VAT

View > More Info

Our stores > Our Shop

Address, zip/postal code, city, state or country > Address, Post Code, City or County

Enter a location (eg.: a zip/postal code, an address,

a city or a country) in order to find the nearest stores. > Enter a location (eg.: a Post Code, an Address or a City) in order to find our Shop.

Cheers

Thanks for suggestions - some good ones there - I'll re-take a look through and re-upload a newer version when I get some time... :-)

Would love to find out how to get this to install separately from the "en" translation and make it "en-uk".

Also - again - anyone know is the export from the "prestashop" theme is a base (like CSS) for the translations, with other theme translations going on "top"?
